Welcome to WALKSanDiego
We envision San Diego communities that invite
walking as a preferred choice for transportation and recreation
for all people. We are dedicated to enhancing the livability
of communities through promotion, education, and advocacy,
by making walking a safe and viable choice for all people.

Saturday, February 6th, 9:00 a.m.
North Park-University Heights Walk - meet Park
Blvd & Upas St. (in front of the Roosevelt Middle
School)
The Greater North Park Community Plan is being updated
and the community planning group is looking for your input
on the good and bad of land uses, urban design, and pedestrian/bike
facilities. We'll take a four-mile walk up the Park Blvd
corridor between Balboa Park and Adams Ave and each walker
is encouraged to provide input on a survey form about
various design issues along the walk. A great way to help
out the planning group with your thoughts on how this
great community can be even better in the coming years!
Saturday, February 20th, 9:00 a.m.
North Park-University Heights Walk - meet at Park Blvd
& Upas St.
This will roughly follow the February 6th walk route,
but will focus on the history of the North Park and University
Heights neighborhoods. Come learn about the early Egyptian-King
Tut architecture craze in the early 1900's, the San Diego
Normal School (predecessor to San Diego State University),
the old Mission Cliff Gardens and Ostrich Farm, and the
old trolley system that once graced San Diego and the
trolley barn facility that once existed on Adams Avenue.
A five-mile walk along flat terrain.
Saturday, March 20th, 9:00 a.m.
Ocean Beach Walk - meet at foot of Ocean Beach Pier
Come learn the fascinating and varied history of this
beach community, including the Wonderland Amusement Park,
the old fishing bridge across the Mission Bay Channel,
and Albert Spaulding's Japanese Gardens at Sunset Cliffs.
A five-mile walk with some hills.
Saturday, April 17th, 9:00 a.m.
Balboa Park Walk - meet at 6th Ave & Laurel St.
Join us for a walk through and around Balboa Park, with
a focus on the history and legacy from the 1915-16 and
1935-36 expositions that gave us many of the beautiful
buildings and gardens we see today. There are plenty of
quirky and sometimes bizarre pieces of trivia that characterized
these fairs that attracted visitors from all over the
world. A four-mile walk on generally level terrain with
a few modest uphill sections.
Uptown Scores on Walkability
Lucky residents of Hillcrest, Kensington
and Park West likely have better health,
breathe cleaner air, interact more often with their neighbors
and are even gentler on the environment. That's because
they live in "very walkable" neighborhoods,
according to the latest Walk
Score ratings. Walk Score bases walkability not on
how pretty a neighborhood is, but on how easy it is to
live a "car-lite lifestyle." Under its criteria,
walkable neighborhoods have a discernible center, a population
density compact enough for local businesses to flourish
and for public transportation to run frequently, a mix
of businesses and residences both rich and poor, parks
and public spaces for recreation, pedestrian-friendly
design, and nearby schools and workplaces.

10,000 Steps a Day
Ultimately, everyone's goal is to increase their physical
activity energy expenditure to about 300-400 kilocalories
per day to achieve the most health benefits.
The simplest way to do that is taking 10,000 steps a day,
including steps taken going uphill and downhill, steps
taken going up and down stairs, and steps taken walking
on level ground. Have you thought about counting
your steps with a pedometer? Check
out this website for frequently asked questions (FAQ),
a guide to pedometer prices and how long you can expect
one to last.
