WalkSanDiego was founded in 1998 by volunteers with professional backgrounds involving land use, air quality, transportation and development issues who shared a passion for creating neighborhoods t hat people want t to explore on foot, not speed through in a car.

A little more than 10 years later, WalkSanDiego is an established and widely respected nonprofit organization providing elected officials, government agencies, community leaders and civic improvement groups with educational materials and technical assistance to build political, commercial and civic support for street design that supports pedestrian activity. With revenues derived from grants, consulting contracts, events, membership dues and major gifts, WalkSanDiego operates on a budget of over half a million dollars and employs a full time Executive Director and support staff.

WalkSanDiego now conducts education, training, outreach and advocacy programs throughout San Diego County. The organization works closely with traffic engineers, city planners, elected officials and concerned citizens to make neighborhoods and communities more walkable.

To recognize others who are dedicated to making our region more walkable, each year, WalkSanDiego presents our Golden Footprint Awards to honor individuals, businesses, government agencies and community organizations t hat have undertaken exemplary projects that have enhanced the pedestrian experience in neighborhoods throughout the San Diego region.

WalkSanDiego and  partners continue to enhance the lives regional residents by helping to create safe and vibrant streets… one step at a time.
