History

WalkSanDiego was founded in 1998 by volunteers with professional backgrounds in land use, air quality, transportation and development issues who shared a passion for creating neighborhoods that people want to explore on foot, not speed through in a car.

WalkSanDiego is now an established and widely respected nonprofit organization providing elected officials, government agencies, community leaders and civic improvement groups with educational materials and technical assistance to build political, commercial and civic support for street design that supports pedestrian activity. With revenues derived from grants, consulting contracts, events, membership dues and major gifts, WalkSanDiego operates on a budget of over half a million dollars and employs a full time Executive Director and support staff.

WalkSanDiego conducts education, training, outreach and advocacy programs throughout San Diego County. The organization works closely with traffic engineers, city planners, elected officials and concerned citizens to make neighborhoods and communities more walkable.

To recognize others who are dedicated to making our region more walkable, each year, WalkSanDiego presents our Golden Footprint Awards to honor individuals, businesses, government agencies and community organizations that have undertaken exemplary projects to enhance the pedestrian experience in neighborhoods throughout the San Diego region.

WalkSanDiego and partners continue to enhance the quality of life throughout the region by helping to create safe and vibrant streets… one step at a time.
