Mission & Vision

Our Mission

WalkSanDiego is dedicated to enhancing the livability of communities through promotion, education, and advocacy, by making walking a safe and viable choice for all people.

Our Vision

We envision San Diego communities that invite walking as a preferred choice for transportation and recreation for all people.

Guiding Principles

  • Walking is a fundamental human activity and basic social need, and people of all abilities should be able to walk safely along and across all streets and designated walkways in their communities.

  • Walkable community policies promote health, economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and social equity.

  • Transportation and street design decisions ultimately influence the safety and viability of walking. Therefore, designs that accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians should be integrated into all decisions about streets and walkways.

  • The best land use decisions enhance walkability by creating proximity to destinations.

  • Walkable streets can strengthen communities by promoting random, spontaneous social interaction among neighbors, merchants, and families.

  • Walking provides an additional travel choice that helps promote a variety of transportation options.

  • Low income communities are disproportionately impacted by poor walking conditions and should be prioritized for infrastructure improvements that enhance walkability.
