Walking, Biking, and Transit - It's a Gas!
Skyrocketing fuel costs have everyone scrambling for alternatives to hopping in the car. Here's WALKSanDiego's list of suggestions:
- Try transit - Many San Diegans have never ridden a bus or trolley. It's easy! Plan your trip at www.sdcommute.com, or get personalized help at (619) 233-3004. In North County, call 511.
- Shop locally - Explore your own neighborhood and try walking or biking to meet daily needs. A little higher cost for bread might be worth it now that trekking to the Costco is more expensive.
- Burn calories, not fossil fuels! - Set a walking goal, and pick up needed items on your way home. Use a cart or backpack for larger loads.

10,000 Steps a Day
Ultimately, everyone's goal is to increase their physical activity energy expenditure to about 300-400 kilocalories per day to achieve the most health benefits. The simplest way to do that is taking 10,000 steps a day, including steps taken going uphill and downhill, steps taken going up and down stairs, and steps taken walking on level ground. Have you thought about counting your steps with a pedometer? Check out this website for frequently asked questions (FAQ), a guide to pedometer prices and how long you can expect one to last.
