A Senate Bill (1555) intended to promote safer conditions
for pedestrian and bicyclists and to encourage more Californians
to participate in walking and cycling is making its way through
the legislature.
The Bill would create a fund to be administered by the State
Department of Health Services by imposing a fee on driver
license renewals of motorists with two or more points on their
record. The estimated revenues of $5 - $10 million annually
would support local training, education and technical assistance
programs promoting pedestrian and bicyclist safety and mobility.
Chris Morfas, Executive Director of the California Bicycle
Coalition (the bill's sponsor) encourages supporters of
bicycling and walking in San Diego to contact Senator Dede
Alpert who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee
that will be reviewing the Bill next.
