December 6 was the date of SANDAG's only public hearing on
its latest, 30-year transportation plan, known as Mobility
2030.
WalkSanDiego boardmembers Tina Zenzola and
Kathleen Ferrier, along with member Maureen Aitken,
spoke forcefully about the need for better pedestrian accommodations
and the relatively low funding level proposed by SANDAG.
Maureen emphasized the need for a regional Safe Routes
to School funding source. As the pedestrian access organizer
at her own neighborhood school, she sees how tragically difficult
it is for children to remain safe from neighborhood traffic.

Recently, Caltrans held an in-house training on November
13-14, 2002 for staff working in the Office of Community Planning.
Director Jeff Morales issued a surprisingly progressive
'call to action' at the start of the conference.
