Carlsbad

Carlsbad has a Traffic Management Program in place to gather input from residents about traffic issues. As part of the program, the City appointed a committee of seven citizens to work with staff on an ongoing basis in developing solutions for any Carlsbad neighborhood affected by traffic problems.

  • To get started, residents should write a letter or e-mail (transportation@carlsbadca.gov) to the Carlsbad Transportation Department and describe the problem.
  • The City will respond by initiating a Traffic Request and assigning an engineer to investigate the site and conduct an engineering study.
  • Once this is complete, the City will determine whether or not to make improvements and if so, what kind. They should contact you with this information. If you don’t hear back from them, contact their office again.
  • Carlsbad encourages residents to get involved in this process. A statement in the Traffic Management Program says: ‘Residents are encouraged to participate throughout the process and are informed of measures taken to solve the traffic problem.’

Envision Carlsbad - General Plan Update

La Costa Avenue Traffic Calming Improvements. An excellent example of traffic calming techniques for the stretch of La Costa Avenue between Rancho Santa Fe Road and El Camino Real including a road diet and roundabouts. Over the years, traffic increased along the heavily traveled road making it difficult to enter and exit residences located on the Avenue. City staff worked with residents along La Costa Avenue to address their safety concerns and develop improvements that balanced traffic safety and the needs of motorists with the quality of life for those who live in the neighborhood. The Improvement Plan was approved by City Council in November 2011. WalkSanDiego testified to support the proposed improvements.
